The Brief

Jesuit Volunteers Canada is a faith based and holistic year-long program with the chance to renew for a second year. During the program JVs will work with and be of service to the poor in order to learn about poverty from the “ground up.” JVs are placed in a low income neighbourhood where they live in solidarity with the people that they serve.

The Experience

While each JV’s experience will be a little different, the common aspects of the program are:

  • Eleven month commitment from the beginning of September to the end of July
  • Full-time work placements as community developers, educators, food justice advocates, youth workers, shelter providers and others.
  • Provision of room and board
  • $30/week stipend and an end of year bonus payment
  • Living in community with fellow JVs
  • One on one support through a spiritual director
  • Four retreats that take place throughout the year
  • Ongoing enrichment through community and spirituality nights
  • Help with the cost of the return trip home for those who complete the year commitment
